Graduation is a time of celebration and for our students, it is a time to acknowledge and celebrate their accomplishment of finishing the long road of studies. But for me, graduation is a time of juggling--juggling kids and participation in the graduation ceremony. Last year, I tried to bring Calvin along with me to graduation, but ended up leaving early as he was just too distracting to what was going on. So this year, I decided that I would only take Molly as I’m still nursing her, but I’d drop Calvin off at a friend’s house.
So this was my graduation day: wake up early, shower, pack bags for the children, get everyone dressed and fed and in the car. Take Calvin to his friend’s house. Drive to the college. Give Molly to a faculty member to hold. Put on my robe. Practice the piano as I’m playing for the ceremony and practice with the choir. Go get Molly. Go take pictures but hide Molly behind someone in the photo. Put Molly down for a nap in our office. Wake Molly up and give her to another faculty member, Pradip. Play the processional. Get Molly. Give Molly to another faculty member, Craig, while I play the hymn with the choir. Go take Molly downstairs to the office to nurse and eat solids during the graduation address. Bring Molly back up and go to my seat. Give Molly to Craig while I play the recessional. Get Molly and put her in the car to fall asleep while I greet some graduates and pack up the car to go. Drive to go pick up Calvin. Go home and put both kids to sleep in their beds!
