Donna, our maid who was here from the beginning, quit last week. It just seems like she is done being a maid and wants to farm her family's farm. Her last day was Friday, August 29. So this past week I had my friend's maid, Cebo, fill in for 4 days and we had Kathy, a potential maid we're wanting to hire, come for 1 day. Both were here on their own at certain times throughout the week.
I'm collecting the old Zimbabwe currency and have piles of this nearly worthless (though still in circulation) money by my bed. I know exactly how many bills are in each pile. I went to count them today and found whole piles missing or 30 bills missing from one pile or 25 missing from another! We have a thief! At first I thought I had made a mistake, but then it became obvious as none of the smaller denominations were missing; only the big ones were gone! I couldn't have possibly made so many counting errors.
There are three possibilities: either Donna took it before leaving, Cebo took it carefully throughout the week making sure I wouldn't notice any missing from the piles or Kathy took it all at once. The difficult thing is that all of them come HIGHLY recommended and have been working as maids for years. But because times get continually more difficult, the temptations just to feed ones families are high. One can never really be trusted even if they are 100% trustworthy! That is the hard and sad thing about living here--people who are good people do bad things to survive.
So Mat and I decided to leave the piles of money out for Monday as Kathy starts working every morning starting on Monday. We will count it everyday to see if any are missing. If so, we will fire her immediately. If our friends want to "test" Cebo, then I think we may have her come and help us in the afternoons and count the money after Kathy leaves and before and after Cebo is there. We'll see how this test week goes...
