This is a continued blog from September 6th's entry. So read that entry first and then read this one.
So I counted all my seperate piles of money and left them out right where they were last week. I am determined to catch the thief! Kathy, the new maid, is supposed to come this morning so we'll see if anything is missing after today.
I waited for Kathy to come in the morning, but she hadn't shown up for the day. I had to run out of the house for a few hours, so I left the doors unlocked as normal while I went away. Our house is surrounded by a electric fenced wall and electric gate so that no one can come in and out of the property. The only person on our property at that time was our gardener as his wife went to work that morning.
When I came back, Kathy still hadn't arrived to start work, but when I went to the piles of money, one was missing!!! IT'S THE GARDENER!!! Oh my goodness--he came into the house and took the money! I called Mat and he came home immediately. I wanted to confront Melusi before he took his lunch break and spent all the money. Mat and I together confronted him. He denied it. We continued to say that there was no one else on the property so it must be him. He continued to deny it. I asked if he thought Turbo the dog stole the money then. He said no and continued to deny it! Finally when I said we were going to have to call the police, he apologized. I asked him for the money back and he gave most of it back, claiming that was all that he had taken. I asked for the money back from last week and he said he didn't take that money.
We told him he had to leave the property immediately as we were firing him. He kept saying, "But I apologized and I won't do it again." But that trust is now broken and would never be restored--he came into our house! I felt so intruded upon and betrayed! Melusi and his wife ended up staying one more night on the property and he left early in the morning to arrange to stay somewhere else. He came back around 11am to tell me he had found another gardening job and the new employer would come with her truck to help him move his stuff. I was happy for him that he found something else, but shocked that the new employer didn't seek out any references for Melusi before hiring him!! She simply brought him over with her truck, asked if he "was a good one" and took his stuff and left. Shocking!
All in all, we were both SO saddened! Though glad it wasn't any of the maids, we really felt sad that Melusi would risk his job and providing for his family by stealing money that was equivalent to one loaf of bread! Was it worth it? Anyway, now we are on the hunt for a new gardener, which are apparently hard to find.
