When we got Agnes, our maid, we knew she was a good maid who was trustworthy but that she also would bring drama into life. Many times when things were communicated to her, she'd get so worked up in her head and misunderstand what was said and, as a result, would act brashly. But we still decided to take her on as a maid since she was overall a good worker and was trustworthy. When we moved her onto the property of the old house we were living in, she had SO MUCH STUFF! Truckloads of belongings! Because we didn't have a gardener living on the property, she was able to occupy both the gardener and maid's quarters. But when we moved onto our new property, all of her stuff wouldn't fit in her single room so she kept all her stuff in our storage garages. Obviously we needed the storage for our stuff and some of the house owner's stuff, so I asked her son to explain to her that she needed to find another place to keep her stuff. I wanted to make sure she understood that we weren't saying we didn't want her, but that we didn't want her stuff! So her son came to talk to her and I also talked to her about moving her stuff. She seemed fine with the idea of finding a storage place and had been actively looking around to see where she could keep her stuff. Meanwhile, the roof to the maid's room was leaking, which I know had been getting all of her blankets wet everytime it rained. So I had a guy come out to look at it. He has to buy his supplies in Botswana before he can fix the leak, so repairing the roof will take time. But I let the maid know that the roof would soon be fixed once the materials were purchased. Anyway, Mat and I prepared this Friday morning to leave for Francistown that day. We were hurrying to get out the door and didn't tell the maid where we were going, thinking that she really didn't need to know our business anyway. We get back on the weekend and await the maid to come into the house on Monday morning, but she didn't show up. Lance, a man staying with us for a few weeks, told us that he thought the maid left over the weekend. He said she asked where we were and he told her that we went to Botswana. She was so upset that we didn't tell her! So apparently when a truck came on Friday to take her stuff to storage, she decided to just pack up everything and leave without telling us! So Monday morning I'm struck with the fact that I now have loads of housework to do—a pile of dishes that took over 2 hours to wash, vacuuming, cleaning, etc. AHH! Although many of you probably won't sympathize with this since you don't have maids, life here is a bit different and more time consuming than back home. Back home you typically have a dishwasher and can just run to the store for your groceries or pre-made meals, but here you do the dishes by hand and make whatever you want to eat from scratch! So those two things alone take up SO much time!
Now we are on the hunt for another maid—a trustworthy, hardworking and knowledgeable maid is hard to find! AHHH!!
