Mat came home from work early today in order to fix his computer. He accidently knocked over his coffee onto his laptop, so came home to dry out the keyboard with the hair dryer. But the computer still wasn't working. It looked as if the "a" key were stuck and just kept typing aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Then he took the entire computer apart to get to the keyboard and have a look. After assembling it all together, it still wasn't working! Then he just let it reboot and run for awhile hoping the problem would sort itself out. Still not working right as the "a" key was sticking. He gave up for awhile, we made pizza for dinner and watched a DVD to get our minds off of it. This is the 3rd laptop he has gone through since we've been here in Africa. The first one had a manufacturing default, the second one was stolen and this third one has now drowned. In my head I'm starting to make plans as to who can take the laptop back to the US, send it in to get fixed as it is still under warranty, and get it to my parents before they leave to come here at the end of July.
At the end of the night, Mat went back to the computer and tried to hook up our external keyboard to the computer to see if the keyboard was the only problem with the computer. Fortunately the external keyboard works fine with the computer so the problem is solely the keyboard on the laptop. Mat looked online to order another keyboard for his laptop, but HP doesn't seem to sell that individual part (as they probably assume that you'll send in the laptop for repairs). So now he has to try to call HP to get the keyboard in time for my parents to bring it out!
We are really thankful overall that it is only the keyboard that is faulty. Mat really handled the entire situation very well considering this is the 3rd laptop that has gone down. I really believe his computer is an area of spiritual warfare as it is the main tool which is so crucial for him to do his job, both in teaching and with the IT department at the college. Thankfully he can still use his laptop for work while we sort out getting a new keyboard.
Oh, did I mention that Calvin tripped over my lamp cord tonight and broke my bedside lamp? Thank goodness we have a hearty supply of superglue! I managed to salvage the lamp as it doesn't look too bad.
